Things have calmed down a bit, but Katz said the big-name projects they have worked on should be a track record of quality. But when they were helping with the “The Simpsons Movie” the studio employed about 130, she said. “We’re trying to give every piece of information for the layout artists and background artists, so when the camera is here they still have that picture to work off,” he said.Ībout 70 employees fill the office, Katz said - from technicians who work on computer-generated graphics to color coordinators.
Generally, he creates a complete picture of a set or scene - everything from the location of shelves, down to the minute rubble on the floor - so the animators and directors know what to work with, he said. “It’s a challenge not to stylize it and make it your own version.”īackground designer Jeff Mertz was working on some concept drawings. “Everybody sort of visualizes the character differently in their head,” he said. His job is to make sure he consistently draws each character exactly like the character’s standard model, he said.
“I make sure everyone is on the same page,” he said.Īfter the story board, the project moves to the character and background layout people, Katz said.Ĭharacter layout artist Robert Moore leafed through a blue notebook like a flip book, showing a rough animation of a moving robot arm. The process begins after the studio receives the script and audio track, Katz said.ĭirector Peter Avanzino oversees the entire project in his supervisory role as it goes through the different departments.

The writing and voice acting happen elsewhere, Katz said.īut the studio takes care of almost all of the animation and art work for its projects from its Glendale office - three floors full of Mac computers and drawing boards with so many doodles and artwork posted around the place it could serve as a contemporary pop culture gallery.
